1733 — Muhammad ibn Ahmad informed us; Uthman said: Hanbal ibn Ishaq related to us; al-Hasan ibn Bishr related to us; al-Mu‘afa ibn ‘Imran related to us, from al-Salt ibn Dinar, from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, who said:

“There was once a period in my life when I did not think I would live to encounter people among whom one would say, ‘I am a believer whose faith is complete,’ and would not be satisfied until he said, ‘Gabriel and Michael are upon the same faith as I am.’ Then Satan continued to lead them on until one of them said that he is a believer, even if he were to have intercourse with his mother, his sister, or his daughter. Yet I met many of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and not one of them died without fearing hypocrisy for himself.”
