1722 — Al-Qasim ibn Ja'far informed us. He said: Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Hammad narrated to us. He said: Al-Abbas ibn Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Ahmad ibn Khalid al-Wahbi narrated to us. He said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, from Qays ibn Abi Muhammad, who said ⦗1021⦘: I was sitting with Ibn Umar when a man from the people of Syria came to him and said, “O Abu Abd al-Rahman, we have vineyards and grapes, and we sell from them.” He said, “Which of these do you mean? As for grapes, they are lawful; as for raisins, they are lawful; but as for wine, it is unlawful.”
He said: Then he raised his voice and said, “O Allah, I call You and those present to witness that I do not deem it permissible to press it, drink it, serve it to others, sell it, or give it as a gift. By Him in whose hand is the soul of Ibn Umar, no servant drinks it except that faith diminishes from his heart, until neither little nor much of it remains. Nor is it found in a house except that it becomes a defiling, polluting presence within it.”
