1638 — Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Umar informed us; Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hatim said: al-Hasan ibn Arafah narrated to us; Abbad al-Muhallabi narrated to us, from Abu Jamrah, from Ibn Abbas, who said:
“The delegation of Abd al-Qays came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, we are a tribe of Rabi'ah, and the disbelievers of Mudar stand between us and you, so we can reach you only during a sacred month. Therefore, command us to do something that we may act upon and to which we may call those behind us.’
He said, ‘I command you to do four things and forbid you from four: I command you to have faith in Allah’—then he explained it to them—‘to testify that there is no god worthy of worship but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; to establish the prayer; to give zakah; and to hand over one-fifth of the spoils you acquire.’”
