1629 — ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Yaʿqūb informed us. Aḥmad ibn Khālid al-Ḥarūrī informed us. He said: Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Dhuhlī narrated to us. He said: Ḥajjāj ibn al-Minhal narrated to us. He said: Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Faith has seventy-odd branches. The best of them is the declaration, ‘There is no god worthy of worship but Allah,’ and the lowest of them is removing a bone from the road. And modesty is a branch of faith.”
Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān narrated it as: “sixty or seventy”; and it was narrated from him by Ibn al-Mubārak, Khālid ibn al-Ḥārith, and Abū Khālid al-Aḥmar. Al-Layth ibn Saʿd narrated it from him with uncertainty over the phrase “seventy-odd,” and they narrated from him: “the highest of them,” in place of “the best of them.”
