1601 — Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Nadr narrated to us: Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Sa'dan narrated to us: Shu'ayb ibn Ayyub narrated to us: Ja'far ibn Awn narrated to us: Abu Umays narrated to us, from Qays ibn Muslim, from Tariq ibn Shihab, who said: A Jewish man came to Umar and said, “You recite in your Book a verse which, had it been revealed to us, the Jews, we would have taken that day as a festival.” He said, “And which verse is that?” He replied:
“Today I have perfected for you your religion, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” [al-Ma'idah 5:3]
Umar said, “Indeed, I know the day on which it was revealed and the place in which it was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: on the Day of Arafah, and it was a Friday.” Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated it through Ja'far ibn Awn.
