1579 — Ubayd Allah ibn Muhammad informed us: Uthman ibn Ahmad informed us: Ja‘far ibn Muhammad—that is, Ibn Shakir—narrated to us. He said: Qabisah narrated to us. He said: Harun ibn Ibrahim al-Tabrizi narrated to us. He said: I heard Abd Allah ibn Ubayd ibn Umayr say:

“Faith is a leader, deeds are a driver, and the soul is stubborn. If its leader grows slack, its driver will not keep straight; and if its driver grows slack, it will not keep straight ⦗929⦘ for its leader. Faith in Allah must be accompanied by deeds, and deeds by faith. Neither is sound except with the other, until the two proceed together toward goodness, if Allah wills.”
