1576 — Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abd Allah ibn Mahdi informed us: Uthman ibn Muhammad ibn Harun narrated to us; Ahmad ibn Shayban narrated to us; Mu'ammal—that is, Ibn Isma'il—narrated to us; Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Amr ibn Malik al-Nukri, from Abu al-Jawza', from Ibn Abbas. I believe that he traced it back to the Prophet: “The bonds of Islam and the foundations of the religion are three, upon which Islam is established: the testimony that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, the prayer, and fasting Ramadan. Whoever abandons one of them is thereby a disbeliever whose blood may lawfully be shed. Yet you may find him wealthy and not having performed Hajj, and he remains thereby a disbeliever, but his blood is not lawful. And you may find him wealthy and not paying zakah, and he remains thereby a disbeliever, but his blood is not lawful.”
