1530 — Jafar ibn Abd Allah ibn Yaqub informed us; Muhammad ibn Harun al-Ruyani informed us; he said: Abu al-Rabi narrated to us; he said: Abu Awanah narrated to us, from Yala, from Abd Allah ibn Khirash, from his father, who said: “Umar alighted at al-Jabiyah. He passed by Muadh ibn Jabal while he was sitting in a gathering, and said to him, ‘O Muadh, come to me, but let none of the people come with you.’ Muadh then came to him, and he said, ‘O Muadh, upon what does the establishment of this matter rest?’ He replied, ‘Prayer; it is the religion.’ He said, ‘Then what?’ He replied, ‘Then obedience—and there will be disagreement.’ Umar said, ‘That is enough for me,’ though he wished to say more to him. When Umar assumed office, Muadh said, ‘By the Lord of Muadh, no human being among them asked him about it.’ He said: He informed me that he heard Umar supplicating from the pulpit: ‘O Allah, keep us firm upon Your command, protect us by Your rope, and grant us from Your bounty.’”
