1496 — ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad informed us; al-Husayn ibn Isma‘il informed us; Yusuf ibn Musa narrated to us; Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi narrated to us; Salam ibn Abi Muti‘ narrated to us; I heard Ma‘mar narrating from al-Zuhri, from ‘Amir ibn Sa‘d, from Sa‘d, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, distributed something, giving to some people and withholding from others. So I said, “O Messenger of Allah, you gave to so-and-so and so-and-so, but withheld from so-and-so, though he is a believer.” He said, “Do not say, ‘a believer’; say, ‘a Muslim.’”

Ibn Shihab said: “The desert Arabs say, ‘We believe.’ Say, ‘You have not believed; rather say, “We have submitted,”’” [al-Hujurat: 14].
