1485 — Al-Qasim ibn Ja‘far informed us; Ali ibn Ishaq informed us; Ali ibn Harb narrated to us; Quraysh ibn Anas narrated to us; Salih ibn Abi al-Akhdar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Suwayd ibn Yazid al-Sulami, who said:
I passed by the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah, and there was Abu Dharr. I greeted him and sat with him. Uthman was mentioned, and he said, “I shall never speak of him except good”—three times—“because of something I saw from the Messenger of Allah in one of the Messenger of Allah’s private occasions, which is not known from him.” He passed by me, and I followed him until he reached a place which he had designated. He sat down and said, “O Abu Dharr, what has brought you here?” I replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.”
Then Abu Bakr came, greeted him, and sat to the right of the Messenger of Allah ⦗887⦘. Then Umar came, greeted him, and sat to Abu Bakr’s right. Then Uthman came, greeted him, and sat to Umar’s right. The Prophet took seven or nine pebbles, and they glorified Allah until I heard from them a humming like the humming of bees. He then set them down, and they fell silent. Then he took them and placed them in Abu Bakr’s hand, and they glorified Allah until I heard from them a humming like the humming of bees. He then set them down, and they fell silent. Then he took them and placed them in Umar’s hand, and they glorified Allah until I heard from them a humming like the humming of bees. He then set them down, and they fell silent. Then he took them and placed them in Uthman’s hand, and they glorified Allah until I heard from them a humming like the humming of bees. He then set them down, and they fell silent.”
The wording is that of Ali ibn Harb’s hadith.
