1483 — Jaʿfar ibn ʿAbd Allah informed us. Muhammad ibn Harun al-Ruwayani informed us. He said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us. He said: ʿAbd Allah ibn Yusuf narrated to us. He said: Malik ibn Anas narrated to us, from Ishaq ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Abi Talhah, who heard Anas ibn Malik say:
Abu Talhah said to Umm Sulaym, “I have heard the voice of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sounding weak, and I can recognize hunger in it. Do you have anything?”
She replied, “Yes.” She then brought out some barley loaves, took out one of her head-coverings, wrapped the bread in part of it, tucked it beneath my garment, and wrapped the rest of it around me. She then sent me to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
He said: I went with it and found the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, in the mosque with people around him. I stood before them, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asked me, “Did Abu Talhah send you?”
I said, “Yes.”
He asked, “With food?”
I said, “Yes.”
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, then said to those with him, “Rise.” He set out, and I went ahead of them until we came to Abu Talhah. I informed him, and Abu Talhah said, “O Umm Sulaym, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, has come with the people, while we do not have enough food to feed them.”
She replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.”
Abu Talhah then went out to meet the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, returned with Abu Talhah until they entered. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Bring what you have, O Umm Sulaym.”
She brought that bread, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, ordered it to be crumbled. Umm Sulaym squeezed a small skin of clarified butter over it ⦗886⦘. Then the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said over it whatever Allah willed him to say. He then said, “Let ten enter.” So he admitted them, and they ate until they were full, then left. He again said, “Let ten enter.” So he admitted them, and they ate until they were full, then left. Then he admitted another ten, until all the people had eaten and were satisfied; there were seventy or eighty men.
Al-Bukhari related it through ʿAbd Allah ibn Yusuf, and Muslim through Malik’s narration.
