Isa ibn Ali informed us; Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Aziz al-Baghawi informed us. He said: Isa ibn Salim, Abu Sa‘id al-Shashi, narrated to us. He said: Ubayd Allah ibn Amr al-Raqqi narrated to us, from Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Aqil, from the son of Ubayy ibn Ka‘b, from his father. By another chain:
1475—Isa informed us, and Abd Allah informed us. He said: Harun ibn Abd Allah, Abu Musa, narrated to us. He said: Zakariyya ibn Adi narrated to us. He said: Ubayd Allah ibn Amr narrated to us, from Ibn Aqil, from al-Tufayl ibn Ubayy ⦗881⦘, from his father, who said:
The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him) would pray facing a tree trunk when the mosque was a simple palm-leaf shelter, and he would use it as support while delivering the sermon. One of his Companions said to him, “Would you like us to make you a raised platform upon which you can stand on Friday, so that the people may see you and hear your sermon?” He said, “Yes.”
So they made for him three steps—the steps forming the upper part of the minbar. When the minbar had been made and placed where the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him) had designated, he went to approach the minbar and passed by the trunk. When he had gone beyond it, the trunk groaned until it fell and split apart. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him) returned and stroked it with his hand until it became still. Then he returned, and whenever he prayed, he would pray facing it.
When the mosque was demolished and rebuilt, Ubayy ibn Ka‘b took that trunk, and it remained with him until it decayed, the earth consumed it, and it became dust. The wording is that of Harun’s narration.
