1472 — Ja‘far ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Ya‘qub informed us; Muhammad ibn Harun al-Ruyani informed us. He said: Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us; he said: ‘Umar ibn Yunus narrated to us; he said: ‘Ikrimah ibn ‘Ammar narrated to us; he said: Ishaq ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Abi Talhah narrated to me; he said: Anas ibn Malik narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would stand on Friday and lean his back against a palm trunk erected in the mosque. Then a Roman came and said, “Shall we not make something for you upon which you may sit, such that you appear as though standing?” So he made for him a pulpit with two steps, while he would sit upon the third. When the Prophet of Allah ﷺ sat upon the pulpit, the trunk began to moan like the lowing of a bull, until the mosque shook from its moaning, grieving for the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ then descended from the pulpit and embraced it while it was moaning. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ embraced it, it became still. He then said: “By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, had I not embraced it, it would have continued like this until the Day of Resurrection, grieving for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then ordered that it be buried.
A sound chain of transmission according to Muslim’s criteria; he was required to include it. Ibn Khuzaymah also transmitted it.
