1465—And ‘Ali ibn ‘Umar ibn Ibrahim informed us: Isma‘il ibn Muhammad narrated to us; ‘Abbas ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Abu al-‘Abbas Wahb ibn Jarir ibn Hazim narrated to us; Shu‘bah narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, from Mujahid, from Ibn ‘Umar, concerning His saying: “The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split apart” [al-Qamar: 1]. He said: This occurred during the lifetime of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: it split into two halves, one on one side of the mountain and the other behind the mountain. He then said, “O Allah, bear witness.”
The wording of Abu Dawud is: “The moon split into two parts during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him,” and no more. Muslim transmitted it through the hadith of Shu‘bah, and Abu ‘Isa through the hadith of Abu Dawud.
