117—Ahmad ibn Ubayd informed us; Ali ibn Abd Allah ibn Mubashshir informed us; Ahmad ibn al-Miqdam narrated to us; Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah, who said: Mu‘adh ibn Jabal said:

“O people, there will be a tribulation in which wealth will become abundant and the Quran will be made accessible, so that the believer and the hypocrite, woman and man, young and old, will all recite it. Then a man will say, ‘I have recited the Quran, yet I do not see the people following me. Should I not recite it to them openly?’”

He said: “So he recites it openly, but no one follows him. He then says, ‘I recited it openly, yet I do not see them following me.’ So he sets up a mosque in his home”—or he said, “in his house, and introduces therein an innovated statement”—or he said, “a discourse that is not from the Book of Allah or the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. So beware of whatever is introduced, for every introduced matter is misguidance.”
