1431 — Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Farisi informed us; Ahmad ibn Sa‘id al-Thaqafi narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Dhuhali narrated to us; Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, from Ma‘mar, from al-Zuhri, who said: Urwah ibn al-Zubayr informed me that Aisha said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“I was shown the land ⦗854⦘ to which you will emigrate: a salt-flat with palm trees between two lava tracts.”
So, when the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, mentioned it, those who emigrated set out toward Medina. Some of those who had emigrated to Abyssinia returned to Medina, and Abu Bakr prepared to emigrate to Medina. But the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to him, “Wait; for I hope that I will be granted permission.”
Abu Bakr asked, “Do you truly hope for that—may my father be sacrificed for you?”
He replied, “Yes.”
So Abu Bakr held himself back in order to accompany the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and for four months he fed the two riding camels he owned on the leaves of the samur tree.
Ma‘mar said: Al-Zuhri said: Urwah said: Aisha said: While we were sitting in our house at the height of the midday heat, someone said to Abu Bakr, “Here is the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, approaching with his head covered, at an hour when he did not usually come to us.”
Abu Bakr said, “May my father and mother be sacrificed for him! Nothing could have brought him at this hour except some pressing matter.”
Aisha said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came and asked permission to enter. He was granted permission and entered. When he entered, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to Abu Bakr, “Have those who are with you leave.”
Abu Bakr replied, “They are only your family—may my father be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah.”
The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “I have been granted permission to depart.”
Abu Bakr asked, “And will I have your companionship, O Messenger of Allah?”
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, replied, “Yes.”
Abu Bakr said, “Then take one of these two riding camels of mine—may my father be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah. ⦗855⦘”
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “For a price.”
Aisha said: We prepared them both with the utmost haste. We made provisions for them in a leather bag, and Asma, daughter of Abu Bakr, cut off a piece of her girdle and tied the bag with it. For that reason, she came to be called the Woman of the Girdle. Then the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, went to a cave in a mountain called Thawr, where he remained for three nights.
