1405—Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Farisi informed us; Ja‘far ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz al-Jarawi informed us; Abu al-Ash‘ath Ahmad ibn al-Miqdam narrated to us; Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi narrated to us; Ja‘far ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Uthman al-Qurashi narrated to us; ‘Umar ibn ‘Urwah ibn al-Zubayr told me: I heard ‘Urwah ibn al-Zubayr narrating from Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, who said:
I said, “O Messenger of Allah, how did you first know and become certain that you were a prophet?”
He said, “O Abu Dharr, two angels came to me while I was in the plain of Mecca. One of them descended to ⦗832⦘ the ground, while the other remained between heaven and earth. One of them said to his companion, ‘Is this he?’ He replied, ‘He is indeed.’ He said, ‘Weigh him against one man.’ So I was weighed against a man, and I outweighed him. Then he said, ‘Weigh him against ten.’ They weighed me against ten men, and I outweighed them. Then he said, ‘Weigh him against one hundred.’ They weighed me against one hundred men, and I outweighed them. Then he said, ‘Weigh him against one thousand.’ They weighed me against one thousand men, and I outweighed them, and they began to fall upon me from the pan of the scale.
One of them said to the other, ‘Were you to weigh him against his entire ummah, he would outweigh them.’ One of them said to his companion, ‘Split open his abdomen.’ So he split open my abdomen. Then one of them said to his companion, ‘Take out his heart’—or he said, ‘Split open his heart, and remove the abode of Satan and the clots of blood.’ So he cast them away. Then one of them said to the other, ‘Wash his abdomen as a vessel is washed, and wash his heart as a garment is washed.’ Then he cast a serenity, like a white emerald, and it was placed in my heart. Then one of them said, ‘Sew up his abdomen.’ So he sewed up my abdomen and placed the seal between my shoulders. No sooner had they turned away from me than I beheld the matter as though seeing it with my own eyes.”
