1395 — Ali ibn Umar informed us; Uthman ibn Ahmad informed us. He said: Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Burti related to us; Abu Salamah related to us; Abu Hazm related to us, from Asim al-Ahwal, who said:
“Qatadah was speaking disparagingly of Amr ibn Ubayd, so I knelt down and said, ‘O Abu al-Khattab, do the jurists then speak ill of one another?’ He replied, ‘O Ahwal, regarding a man who has introduced an innovation, it is better that his innovation be mentioned than that people refrain from speaking about him.’”
He said: “I became upset with Qatadah and lowered my head. Then I saw Amr scratching out a verse from the Quran. I said, ‘What are you doing?’ He replied, ‘I am restoring it.’ ⦗826⦘ He said: ‘So he scratched it out.’ I said, ‘Restore it.’ He replied, ‘I am unable to.’”
