1383 — Muhammad ibn ʿImran informed us. He said: Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Ghasuli informed us. He said: Al-Husayn ibn Yahya narrated to us. He said: I heard al-Fadl ibn Marwan say:

Al-Muʿtasim used to visit the hadith scholar ʿAli ibn ʿAsim, and I would go with him to see him. One day, he said, “ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd narrated to us—and he was a Qadari.” Al-Muʿtasim said, “Do you not know that the Qadariyyah are the Magians of this ummah? Why, then, do you narrate from him?” ⦗820⦘

He replied, “Because he was reliable in hadith and truthful.” Al-Muʿtasim said, “If a Magian were reliable in what he says, would you narrate from him?” ʿAli said to him, “You are a quarrelsome man, Abu Ishaq.”
