Aḥmad ibn ʿUbayd informed us; Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn informed us; Aḥmad ibn Zuhayr narrated to us; Sawwār ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us. He said: “Muʿādh ibn ⦗814⦘ Muʿādh told me: I was with ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd when a man named ʿUthmān ibn Khāsh, the brother of al-Samurī, came to him and said, ‘O Abū ʿUthmān, by Allah, I heard disbelief today!’
He replied, ‘Do not be hasty in calling something disbelief. What did you hear?’
He said, ‘I heard Hāshim al-Awqaʿī saying that “May the hands of Abū Lahab be ruined” [Surah al-Masad 111:1] and “Leave Me with the one whom I created alone” are not in the Mother of the Book, while Allah says:
“Ha-Mim. By the clear Book! Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Quran so that you may understand; and indeed, it is in the Mother of the Book with Us, exalted and full of wisdom.” [Surah al-Zukhruf 43:1]
ʿAmr was silent for a moment, then turned to us and said, ‘By Allah, if the matter is as he says, then neither Abū Lahab nor al-Walīd is to blame.’
ʿUthmān said, ‘This, by Allah, is the religion, O Abū ʿUthmān.’”
