1369—Aḥmad ibn ʿUbayd informed us; Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn informed us; Aḥmad ibn Zuhayr narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb narrated to us; Muʿādh ibn Muʿādh narrated to us. He said:
“I was with ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd when a man came to him and said, ‘Are you not astonished by so-and-so? He claims that “May the hands of Abū Lahab be ruined” [Surah al-Masad 111:1] is in the Preserved Tablet.’
ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd replied, ‘If “May the hands of Abū Lahab be ruined” [Surah al-Masad 111:1] is in the Preserved Tablet, then Abū Lahab is not to blame, nor is al-Walīd to blame’—meaning, with reference to His saying: ‘Leave Me with the one whom I created alone’ [Surah al-Muddaththir 74:11].
