1323 — Ubayd Allah ibn Ahmad informed us; Ibrahim ibn Hammad narrated to us ⦗788⦘; Abu Musa narrated to us; Mu'adh ibn Mu'adh narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Amr narrated to us; al-Zuhri narrated to us, who said:
Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz said, “O Ghaylan, I have been told that you speak concerning divine decree.” He replied, “They are lying about me, O Commander of the Believers.”
He said, “Recite Surat Ya-Sin to me.” So he recited to them:
“Ya-Sin. By the wise Quran. Indeed, you are truly one of the messengers, upon a straight path—a revelation from the Almighty, the Most Merciful—that you may warn a people whose forefathers were not warned, so they are heedless. The Word has certainly come due against most of them, so they do not believe. Indeed, We have placed shackles around their necks, reaching up to their chins, so that their heads are forced up. And We have placed a barrier before them and a barrier behind them, and covered them over, so that they cannot see.” [Ya-Sin: 2]
Ghaylan said, “No, by Allah! It is as though, O Commander of the Believers, I had never recited it until today. Bear witness, O Commander of the Believers, that I repent of my statement concerning divine decree.”
Umar said, “O Allah, if he is truthful, then accept his repentance; but if he is lying, make him a sign for the believers.”
