Reports transmitted concerning the disbelief of the Qadariyyah, the ruling to execute them, those who held that they should be asked to repent, and those who did not hold this view:
It is narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas that the speech of the Qadariyyah is disbelief. It is narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that he cursed them and disavowed them; and Ibn ‘Umar could not have disavowed Muslims. It is narrated from ‘Ali that he said to one who had denied divine decree and then affirmed it: “By Allah, had you said anything other than this, I would have struck that which contains your eyes.” A statement to the same effect is narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas and Ibn ‘Umar.
Among the Successors, ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz and Nafi‘ ibn Malik—the uncle of Malik the jurist—held that they should be asked to repent: if they repent, [they are spared]; otherwise, they are executed. It is also narrated from him: “And they are banished from the lands of the Muslims.” Raja’ ibn Haywah and ‘Ubadah ibn Nusayy are reported to have issued legal rulings calling for their execution.
Among the jurists, it is narrated from Malik ibn Anas, al-Awza‘i, and ‘Ubayd Allah ibn al-Hasan al-‘Anbari that they should be asked to repent; if they repent, [they are spared], and otherwise they are executed.
