1303—Al-Husayn ibn Ahmad informed us, saying: I heard Abu al-Fadl Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn Ahmad al-Jurjani recite from memory in Baghdad, saying: I heard Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub say: I heard al-Rabi‘ say: Al-Shafi‘i recited the following verses to me.
1304—Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Hafs al-Muqri’ informed me, saying: Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas ibn al-Fadl related to us; ‘Imran ibn Musa related to us; al-Rabi‘ ibn Sulayman related to me ⦗777⦘, saying: I was sitting with al-Shafi‘i when the matter of divine decree was mentioned, and he began to recite:
[In the mutaqarib meter]
What You will comes to pass, though I do not will it;
And what I will, if You do not will it, shall never be.
You created Your servants according to what You knew;
By that knowledge, both young and old proceed.
Upon one You bestowed grace, while another You forsook;
One You aided, and another You did not aid.
Among them are wretched, and among them are blessed;
Among them are ugly, and among them are fair.
