Abdullah ibn Abbas came upon some people disputing about divine decree, and said: “Do not differ concerning divine decree. For if you were to say, ‘Allah willed them to act in obedience to Him, yet they passed from Allah’s will to the will of their own selves,’ then you would have ascribed weakness to Allah regarding the greatest of His dominion. And if you were to say, ‘Allah compelled them to commit sins, then punished them for those sins,’ you would be saying that Allah wronged them.”
