1263 — Ubayd Allah ibn Muhammad informed us: Abu Umar al-Zahid narrated to us; he said: al-Atafi narrated to us, from his men, who said: A man from the Shi‘ah said to al-Sadiq, “The Qadariyyah say to us, ‘You are disbelievers.’” He replied, “Write: Allah is not obeyed under compulsion—He is not obeyed under compulsion.” He said: “Allah is not disobeyed under compulsion, nor is He obeyed under compulsion. When He wills obedience, it takes place; and when He wills disobedience, it takes place. If He punishes, then it is with justice; and if He pardons, then it is by His grace.”
