94—Al-Hasan ibn Uthman informed us; Ismail ibn Muhammad informed us; Abbas ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us; Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Asim ibn Abi al-Najud, from Abu Wail, from Abdullah—that is, Ibn Mas'ud—who said:

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, drew a line for us and said, “This is the path of Allah.” He then drew lines alongside it. In his narration from Hammad, Muhammad ibn Ziyad added the words, “to the right and left,” followed by, “These are paths.” Yazid ibn Harun added, “separate paths; upon every one of them is a devil calling people to it.” He then recited this verse:

“And, moreover, this is My path, which is straight, so follow it; and do not follow other ways, for they will lead you away from His way.”
