Ubayd Allah ibn Ahmad informed us; al-Husayn ibn Isma‘il informed us; Ya‘qub ibn Ibrahim al-Darwaqi informed us; al-Hasan ibn Habib ibn Nudbah related to us; Salamah ibn Muhammad related to us, from Nu‘aym al-‘Anbari—who was among al-Hasan’s close companions—that he would say concerning His, Exalted is He, saying: “And beneath it was a treasure belonging to them both” [al-Kahf 18:82]:
“It was a tablet of gold, inscribed with: ‘I marvel at one who believes in divine decree: how can he grieve? ⦗754⦘ I marvel at one who believes in death: how can he rejoice? And I marvel at one who knows this worldly life and how it turns its people over: how can he find reassurance in it? There is no god worthy of worship except Allah; Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.’”
