88—Ubayd Allah ibn Uthman ibn Ali informed us; Uthman ibn Jafar narrated to us; ⦗88⦘ Yusuf ibn Musa narrated to us; Jarir and Ibn Fudayl narrated to us—the wording being that of Jarir ibn Hayyan al-Taymi—from Yazid ibn Hayyan, who said:

“I, Husayn ibn Sabrah, and Umar ibn Muslim went to Zayd ibn Arqam. When we sat with him, Husayn said to him, ‘Zayd, you have encountered much good. Tell us, Zayd, what you heard from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.’

He said, ‘My nephew, by Allah, I have grown old, much time has passed, and I have forgotten some of what I had retained from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. So accept what I narrate to you, but do not press me concerning what I do not narrate.’

Then he said: ‘One day, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, stood among us to deliver a sermon at a body of water called Khumm, between Mecca and Medina. He praised Allah, extolled Him, admonished and reminded us; then he said:

“Now then: O people, I am only a human being. Soon the messenger of my Lord will come to me, and I will answer. I am leaving among you two weighty trusts. The first of them is the Book of Allah, in which there is guidance and light. So hold fast to the Book of Allah and cling firmly to it.”

He then urged adherence to the Book of Allah and encouraged them toward it. Then he said:

“And my household: I remind you of your duty to Allah regarding my household; I remind you of your duty to Allah regarding my household; I remind you of your duty to Allah regarding my household.”’
