1229—Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Ya‘qub and Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Umar informed us. They said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hatim informed us. He said: Al-Hasan ibn Arafah narrated to us. He said: Isma‘il ibn Uyaynah narrated to us. He said: Abu Harun al-Ghanawi narrated to us—by another route:

1230—And Abd al-Rahman ibn Ubayd Allah informed us. He said: Ahmad ibn Sulayman informed us. He said: Abd Allah ibn Ahmad narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us. He said: Isma‘il narrated to us. He said: Abu Harun al-Ghanawi informed us. He said: Abu Sulayman al-Azdi narrated to us, from Abu Yahya, the freedman of Banu Afra, who said ⦗744⦘: “I came to Ibn Abbas accompanied by two men who spoke about the divine decree or denied it. I said, ‘O Ibn Abbas, what do you say concerning the divine decree? These men have come to ask you about the divine decree: whether one commits adultery, steals, or drinks.’

He said: He then pulled back his shirt until he bared his shoulders and said, ‘O Abu Yahya, perhaps you are among those who deny the divine decree and reject it as false. By Allah, were I to know that you, or these two men with you, were among them, I would fight you. If one commits adultery or steals, it is by divine decree; and if he drinks wine, it is by divine decree.’
