1199 — Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Abd Allah informed us. He said: Dalaj ibn Ahmad informed us. He said: Al-Fadl ibn al-Hubab al-Jumahi narrated to us. He said: Abd al-Majid ibn Sa'id ibn Ubayd Allah ibn Abd al-A'la al-Kurayzi narrated to us. He said: Ubayd Allah ibn Abd al-A'la narrated to me, from his father, Abd al-A'la—that is, Ibn Abd Allah ibn Amir ibn Kurayz—from Abd Allah ibn al-Harith ibn Nawfal, who said:
I witnessed Umar ibn al-Khattab delivering a sermon to the people at al-Jabiyah. He said, “Whomever Allah guides, none can lead astray; and whomever He leads astray, none can guide.” The Catholicos was standing before him and said, “Barkast, barkast.” ⦗732⦘ He repeated it, and on the third occasion Umar said, “What is the enemy of Allah saying?”
He replied, “He is saying that Allah neither guides nor leads astray.”
Umar said, “Rather, Allah created you, Allah has led you astray, and Allah will cast you headlong into the Fire upon your nose. By Allah, were it not for a binding covenant that preceded on your behalf, I would have struck off your head.”
The people then dispersed that day, and not even two people differed concerning divine decree.
