1189—ʿUbayd Allah ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad informed us. He said: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us. He said: Muḥammad ibn Yūnus narrated to us. He said: Rāfiʿ ibn Diḥyah al-Musallī narrated to us. He said: ʿUbayd Allah ibn al-Ḥasan, the judge of Basra, narrated to me:
“I had a beautiful non-Arab slave-girl, and I was fond of her. One night, while she was sleeping beside me, I awoke and did not find her. I reached out for her but could not find her, and I thought, ‘Something is wrong.’ When I found her, she was prostrating and saying, ‘By Your love for me, forgive me.’
“I said to her, ‘Do not say this; rather say: “By my love for You.”’ She replied, ‘You idle man! It was His love for me that brought me out of polytheism into Islam, and it was His love for me that awakened my eyes while He caused yours to sleep.’
“I said, ‘Go—you are free for the sake of Allah.’ She said, ‘My master, you have wronged me. I had two rewards, and now I have only one.’”
