1182—Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Fārisī and Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr informed us. They said: Muḥammad ibn Makhlad narrated to us. He said: Al-ʿAbbās ibn Yazīd narrated to us. He said: Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us. He said: ʿĀṣim narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Ḥārith, from Zayd ibn Arqam; and also from ʿĀṣim, from Abū ʿUthmān, from Zayd ibn Arqam, who said:
“I say to you only what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to say: ‘O Allah, grant my soul its piety. You are the best to purify it; You are its Guardian and Master. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit, from a soul that is never satisfied, from a heart that does not humble itself in reverence, and from a supplication that is not answered.’”
Muslim transmitted it from Abū Bakr and Isḥāq ibn Numayr, from Abū Muʿāwiyah.
