1179—Aḥmad ibn ʿUbayd informed us: ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Mubashshir informed us: Aḥmad ibn Sinān narrated to us: Zakariyyā ibn Ṣubayḥ narrated to us: Ṣāliḥ ibn ʿUmar informed us, from Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind, from ʿAmr ibn Saʿīd, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:

In the early days of Islam, a man from the Azd Shanuʾah tribe came to Mecca. He used to treat this madness with healing incantations. He saw some foolish people calling out to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying, “Madman!” He said, “If only I could meet this man.” So he met him and said, “O Muḥammad, I am a man who treats this madness with incantations, and whomever I wish is healed at my hands.”

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “All praise belongs to Allah. We praise Him and seek His help. Whomever ⦗719⦘ Allah guides, none can lead astray; and whomever He leads astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship but Allah alone, without partner, and that Muḥammad is His servant and His Messenger. To proceed.”

The man said, “Repeat these words to me.” So he repeated them. The man said, “I have heard the words of magicians, soothsayers, and poets, but I have never heard anything like these words of yours. They have reached the depths of the sea. Give me your hand, that I may pledge allegiance to you upon Islam.” He said, “And on behalf of your people as well?” He replied, “And on behalf of my people.”
