79—Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Abbas informed us: Abdullah ibn Sulayman ibn al-Ash'ath informed us; Ahmad ibn Salih narrated to us; Asad ibn Musa informed us; Mu'awiyah ibn Salih informed us; Damrah ibn Habib narrated to me, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Amr al-Sulami, that he heard Irbad ibn Sariyah al-Sulami say:
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, delivered to us an exhortation that brought tears to our eyes and struck fear into our hearts. We said, “O Messenger of Allah, this is the exhortation of one bidding farewell. What instruction do you leave us with?” He said:
“I have left you upon a clear path whose night is like its day. None turns away from it after me except one who is doomed. Whoever among you lives will see much disagreement. So adhere to what you know of my sunnah and the sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, who are guided aright. Hold fast to it with your molar teeth. You must obey, even if he is an Abyssinian slave. Indeed, the believer is like a compliant camel: wherever it is led, it follows.” ⦗83⦘
Abu Ja'far—meaning Ahmad ibn Salih—said: This wording, “Indeed, the believer …” through to the end, does not occur in Damrah’s hadith.
