1162 — Ubayd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad informed us: Isma‘il ibn Muhammad informed us: al-Hasan ibn ‘Arafah narrated to us: Marwan ibn Shuja‘ al-Jazari narrated to us, from ‘Abd al-Malik—that is, Ibn Jurayj—from ‘Ata’, who said:

I came to Ibn ‘Abbas while he was drawing water from Zamzam, and the lower parts of his garments had become wet. I said, “People have begun discussing predestination.” He said, “Have they really done so?” I replied, “Yes.” He said, “By Allah, this verse was revealed concerning none but them:

‘Taste the touch of Hell. Indeed, We have created all things according to predestination.’ [al-Qamar 54:49]

They are the worst of this community. Do not visit their sick, nor perform the funeral prayer over their dead. If you show me one of them, I will gouge out his eyes with these two fingers of mine.”
