Al-Hasan ibn Uthman informed us: Ahmad ibn Hamdan informed us: Ahmad ibn al-Hasan related to us: Abd al-Samad Mardawayh related to us: I heard al-Fudayl—that is, Ibn Iyad—say:
“Beware of anyone who sits with a person of innovation. Whoever sits with a person of innovation will not be granted wisdom. I would prefer there to be an iron fortress between myself and a person of innovation. Eating at the home of a Jew or a Christian is dearer to me than eating at the home of a person of innovation.”
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَمْدَانَ قَالَ: ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ: ثنا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ مَرْدَوَيْهِ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْفُضَيْلَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عِيَاضٍ يَقُولُ: مَنْ جَلَسَ مَعَ صَاحِبِ بِدْعَةٍ فَاحْذَرْهُ، وَمَنْ جَلَسَ مَعَ صَاحِبِ الْبِدْعَةِ لَمْ يُعْطَ الْحِكْمَةَ، وَأُحِبُّ أَنْ يَكُونَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ صَاحِبِ بِدْعَةٍ حِصْنٌ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ، آكُلُ عِنْدَ الْيَهُودِيِّ وَالنَّصْرَانِيِّ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ آكُلَ عِنْدَ صَاحِبِ بِدْعَةٍ
