1137 — Ahmad ibn Ubayd informed us: Ali ibn Abdullah ibn Mubashshir informed us: Ahmad ibn al-Miqdam related to us: Hammad ibn Zayd related to us.
1138 — And Abdullah ibn Ahmad informed us: Ahmad ibn Ali ibn al-Ala informed us: Abu al-Ashath related to us: Hammad ibn Zayd related to us, from Zayd ibn Hazim, from Sulayman ibn Yasar, that a man from Banu Ghunaym, called Subaygh ibn Isl, came to Medina. He had books with him, and he began asking about the ambiguous passages of the Quran. This reached Umar, so he sent for him, having prepared palm stalks for him ⦗703⦘.
When he entered Umar's presence and sat down, Umar said, “Who are you?” He replied, “I am Abdullah Subaygh.” Umar said, “And I am Abdullah Umar.” Then he motioned toward him and began striking him with those palm stalks. He continued beating him until he wounded his head and blood began flowing down his face. Subaygh said, “Enough, O Commander of the Believers! By Allah, that which I had in my mind has gone.” The wording is that of Ibn Mubashshir's narration.
