1136 — Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman informed us: Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Baghawi informed us: Dawud ibn Rushayd related to us: Makki related to us, from al-Ju'ayd ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Yazid ibn Khusayfah, from al-Sa'ib ibn Yazid:
Umar ibn al-Khattab was approached, and it was said, “O Commander of the Believers, we have ⦗702⦘ encountered a man who asks about the interpretation of the Quran.” Umar said, “O Allah, grant me power over him.”
Then, one day, as Umar was sitting and providing people with their midday meal, a man came wearing garments and a turban. He ate the meal, and when he had finished, he said, “O Commander of the Believers: ‘By those that scatter far and wide, then those that bear heavy loads.’” [al-Dhariyat 51:1–2]
Umar said, “It is you.” He rose against him, rolled up his sleeves, and continued to whip him until his turban fell off. He then said, “By Him in whose Hand Umar’s soul lies, had I found you with your head shaved, I would have struck your head. Clothe him in garments, place him upon a pack-saddle, and take him out until you bring him to his homeland. Then let him stand as an orator and say: ‘Subaygh sought knowledge, but missed it.’”
Thereafter, Subaygh remained disgraced among his people until he died, though he had been the chief of his people.
