1099—Ubayd Allah ibn Ahmad informed us. Abu Hamid Muhammad ibn Harun al-Hadrami informed us. He said: Ishaq ibn Abi Isra'il and Muhammad ibn Ziyad ibn Ubayd Allah al-Ziyadi narrated to us. They said: Hassan ibn Ibrahim al-Kirmani narrated to us. He said: Atiyyah ibn Atiyyah narrated to us. He said: Ata ibn Abi Rabah narrated to us. He said:
I was sitting with Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib when some men who claimed that Allah had decreed everything except people’s deeds were mentioned. By Allah, I had never seen Sa'id angrier than he was then, to the point that he was about to rise. Then he fell silent and said, “So they have spoken of it! By Allah, I have heard a hadith concerning them that should be warning enough for them, if only they knew.”
I said, “May Allah have mercy on you, what is it?” He looked at me after some of his anger had subsided and said, “Rafi ibn Khadij told me that he heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say”—and he mentioned something similar to the hadith that follows.
1100—Ubayd Allah informed us. He said: Muhammad informed us. He said: al-Hasan ibn ⦗682⦘ al-Sabbah al-Bazzar narrated to us. He said: Abd Allah ibn Yazid Abu Abd al-Rahman narrated to us. He said: Abd Allah ibn Lahi'ah narrated to us. He said: Amr ibn Shu'ayb narrated to me. He said:
I was with Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib when a man came to him and said, “People are saying that Allah decreed everything except people’s deeds.” Sa'id became so angry as I had never seen him become angry before, to the point that he was about to rise. Then he said, “They have done it! Woe to them, if only they knew. I have heard a hadith concerning them that should be sufficient to deter them.”
I said, “What is it, Abu Muhammad? May Allah have mercy on you.” He said, “Rafi ibn Khadij told me, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who said:
“‘There will be people in my community who will disbelieve in Allah and in the Quran without realizing it.’
“I said, ‘What will they say, O Messenger of Allah?’
“He said, ‘They will say: “Good is from Allah, while evil is from Iblis.” They will cite Allah’s Book in support of this, and thereby disbelieve in Allah and in the Quran after faith and knowledge. How much hostility and hatred my community will face from them! Then a widespread transformation will occur among them, and they will become apes and swine. Then the earth will swallow them up; few believers will escape them on that Day. Their relief will be scant, and their grief severe.’
“Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, wept until we too wept at his weeping. It was said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, why are you weeping?’ He said, ‘Out of mercy for those wretches. Among them will be the diligent and the devoted worshipper. They are not the first to have adopted this claim and then found themselves unable to bear its burden. ⦗683⦘ Indeed, most of those among the Children of Israel who perished did so because they denied the divine decree.’
“It was said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is faith in the divine decree?’ He said, ‘That you believe in Allah alone, believe in Paradise and Hellfire, and know that Allah created them both before creating created beings. Then He created created beings for them, assigning whomever He willed among them to Paradise and whomever He willed among them to Hellfire. Each person acts in accordance with a matter that has already been decreed and proceeds toward that for which he was created. Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth.’”
This is Ibn Lahi'ah’s wording of the hadith.
