1094—Ahmad ibn Ubayd informed us. He said: Ali ibn Abdullah ibn Mubashshir informed us. He said: Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us. He said: Abu Abd al-Rahman narrated to us. He said: Kahmas ibn al-Hasan traced the report back to Ibn Abbas. By another route, Hammam ibn Yahya al-Muhallimi traced it back to Ibn Abbas. He said: Abdullah ibn Lahi'ah and Nafi ibn Yazid narrated to me, from Qays ibn Hajjaj al-Rawqi, from Hanash, ⦗678⦘ from Ibn Abbas. I cannot recall which wording belongs to which of the two reports. Ibn Abbas said:
I was riding behind the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said, “O young boy—or, O little boy—shall I not teach you some words?”
1095—Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abdullah ibn Mahdi al-Anbari also informed us. He said: Ahmad ibn Amr ibn Muhammad al-Madani narrated to us. He said: Yunus ibn Abd al-Ala narrated to us. He said: Ibn Wahb informed us. He said: Ibn Lahi'ah and al-Layth narrated to us, from Qays ibn Hajjaj, from Hanash ibn Abdullah, from Abdullah ibn Abbas, who said:
One day, I was riding behind the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he reached his hand back behind me. He said, “O young boy, shall I not teach you some words by which Allah will benefit you? Be mindful of Allah, and He will protect you. Be mindful of Allah, and you will find Him before you. When you seek help, seek help from Allah; and when you ask, ask Allah. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried. Were the whole community to exert itself to benefit you with something Allah has decreed for you, or were the whole community to exert itself to harm you with something Allah has decreed against you.”
In another hadith, Ibn Wahb added: “Know Allah in times of ease, and He will know you in times of hardship. Know that there is much good in patiently bearing what you dislike; that victory comes with patience; that relief comes with distress; and that with hardship comes ease.”
