1064—Isa ibn Ali informed us: Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Baghawi informed us: Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah informed us: Abu al-Ahwas narrated to us—from another chain.
1065—And Abd al-Rahman ibn Umar informed us: Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Yaqub informed us: my grandfather, Yaqub ibn Shaybah, narrated to us: Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us: Abu al-Ahwas narrated to us, from Mansur, from Sa'd ibn Ubaydah, from Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami, from Ali, who said:
We went out with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and came to Baqi' ⦗662⦘ al-Gharqad. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sat down, and we then sat around him. He took a stick and scratched the ground with it. Then he raised his head and said:
“There is no living soul among you whose place in Paradise or Hell—and whether it is wretched or blessed—has not already been known.”
A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, should we not abandon deeds and rely upon what has been written for us? For whoever among us is destined for felicity will attain felicity, and whoever among us is destined for wretchedness will attain wretchedness.”
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Act, for everyone will be facilitated. Whoever is among the people of wretchedness will be facilitated for its deeds, and whoever is among the people of felicity will be facilitated for its deeds.” Then the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, recited:
“As for he who gives and is mindful of Allah, and believes in the finest reward, We will ease his way toward ease. But as for he who is miserly and considers himself self-sufficient, and denies the finest reward, We will ease his way toward hardship.” [al-Layl: 6]
Muslim transmitted it from Abu Bakr.
