Ja‘far ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Ya‘qub reported to us; he said: Muhammad ibn Harun al-Ruyani reported to us; he said: ‘Amr ibn ‘Ali narrated to us; he said: Yazid ibn Zuray‘ narrated to us; he said: Shu‘bah narrated to us, from al-A‘mash.

Through another chain:

1063 — ‘Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Ya‘qub reported to us; he said: Muhammad ibn Qarin ibn al-‘Abbas reported to us; he said: Abu Hatim narrated to us; he said: Adam narrated to us; he said: Shu‘bah narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, who said: I heard Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubaydah narrating from Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman, ⦗661⦘ from ‘Ali, who said:

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was attending a funeral. He took something and began scratching the ground with it, then said: “There is none among you except that his place in the Fire and his place in Paradise have been recorded.”

They said, “O Messenger of Allah, should we not rely upon what has been decreed for us and abandon deeds?”

He said: “Act, for everyone will be facilitated for that for which he was created. Whoever is among the people of felicity will be facilitated toward the deeds of the people of felicity, and whoever is among the people of wretchedness will be facilitated toward the deeds of the people of wretchedness.” Then he recited:

“Then as for he who gives and fears Allah, and believes in the best reward, We will ease him toward ease. But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need, and denies the best reward, We will ease him toward hardship.” [al-Layl: 6]

Al-Bukhari transmitted it through Adam, and Muslim through the narration of Shu‘bah.
