1047—‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn Khayran and ‘Ubayd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn ‘Ali informed us; they said: Ahmad ibn ‘Ali ibn al-‘Ala’ informed us; he said: Abu al-Ash‘ath narrated to us; he said: Ibn Abi ‘Adi narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, who said: Abu al-Zubayr narrated to me, from Abu al-Tufayl, who said ⦗655⦘: “I heard ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud say: ‘The wretched one is he who was wretched in his mother’s womb, and the blessed one is he who takes admonition from the fate of others.’”
He said: “I said, ‘May Satan be disgraced! Can a person be made blessed or wretched before he has done any deeds?’” He said: “So he went to Hudhayfah ibn Asid and informed him of what Ibn Mas‘ud had said. He replied, ‘Shall I not tell you what I heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?’ I said, ‘Indeed.’ He said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: “When the drop of fluid has remained in the womb for forty-two days, the angel of the womb descends and forms its bones, flesh, hearing, and sight. Then he says: ‘My Lord, will it be wretched or blessed?’ Then your Lord decrees whatever He wills, and the angel writes it in the record, with nothing added or omitted.”’
Their wordings are similar. Muslim recorded it through Ibn Jurayj’s narration.
