1043—‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Ahmad al-Qazwini informed us: ‘Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad, known as Balawayh al-Qazwini, narrated to us: Abu ‘Ali al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali ibn Nasr—who was al-Tusi—narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Yazid al-Asfati al-Basri, the hadith scholar of Basra, narrated to us, saying: “I saw the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in a dream, and I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, I have been told on the authority of ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud that he said: “The truthful one whose truthfulness is affirmed related to me”—meaning the hadith concerning divine decree.’ He replied: ‘Yes. By Allah, besides whom there is no god, I did relate it. May Allah have mercy on ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud for relating it; may Allah have mercy on Zayd ibn Wahb for relating it; may Allah have mercy on al-A‘mash for relating it; may Allah have mercy on whoever related it before al-A‘mash; and may Allah have mercy on whoever relates it after al-A‘mash.’”
1044—In his book The Interpretation of Conflicting Hadiths, Ibn Qutaybah said: It has been related concerning ⦗654⦘ Abu al-Hudhayl al-‘Allaf that, when this hadith from ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud was narrated to him, he said: “ ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud lied against the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.” Rather, Abu al-Hudhayl—the disbelieving denier—lied. May Allah curse him.
