1033—Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abd Allah ibn Mahdi al-Anbari informed us; Ahmad ibn Amr al-Madani narrated to us; Yunus ibn Abd al-Ala narrated to us; Ibn Wahb informed us; Yunus ibn Yazid informed me, from Ibn Shihab, from Humayd, who heard Abu Hurayrah narrate from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, a report similar to this hadith. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“Adam and Moses disputed before their Lord, and Adam prevailed over Moses in the argument. Moses said, ‘You are Adam, whom Allah created with His Hand, breathed into you of His Spirit, commanded His angels to prostrate before you, and settled in His Paradise; then, through your sin, you caused mankind to descend to the earth?’

⦗643⦘ Adam said to Moses, ‘You are the one whom Allah chose for His messages and His speech; He gave you the Tablets containing an explanation of all things, and brought you near for intimate discourse. How long before I was created did you find that Allah had written the Torah?’ Moses replied, ‘Forty years.’ Adam said, ‘Did you then find in it: “And Adam disobeyed his Lord, so he went astray” [Taha: 121]?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ Adam said, ‘Then do you blame me for doing something that Allah had decreed for me forty years before He created me?’

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, ‘Thus Adam prevailed over Moses in the argument.’ It was recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim through al-Zuhri’s narration.
