990—Ja‘far ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Ya‘qub informed us; Muhammad ibn Harun al-Ruyani informed us; ‘Isa ibn Ibrahim narrated to us; ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ⦗617⦘ al-Qasim narrated to us; Malik narrated to me from Zayd ibn Abi Unaysa, from ‘Abd al-Hamid ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn al-Khattab, who informed him from Muslim ibn Yasar al-Juhani that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab was asked about this verse: “And when your Lord brought forth from the children of Adam—from their loins—their descendants, and made them testify concerning themselves: ‘Am I not your Lord?’ They said, ‘Yes indeed; we bear witness,’ lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection, ‘We were unaware of this.’”
‘Umar ibn al-Khattab said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, being asked about it, and the Messenger of Allah said: ‘Allah created Adam, then wiped his back with His right hand and brought forth his descendants from him. He said: “I created these for the Fire, and they will perform the deeds of the people of the Fire.”’
A man then said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, then what is the purpose of deeds?’ The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, replied: ‘When Allah creates a servant for the Fire, He causes him to perform the deeds of the people of the Fire, and thereby admits him into the Fire.’”
