977—Ali ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa informed us: Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Wa‘iz narrated to us; ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Yahya ibn Bukayr narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Rashdin narrated to us, from Baqiyyah, from Mubashshir ibn ‘Ubayd, from al-Hajjaj ibn Artah, from ‘Atiyyah al-‘Awfi, from Ibn ‘Abbas concerning His saying:

“Whatever good befalls you is from Allah, and whatever evil befalls you is from yourself.” [al-Nisa’ 4:79]

He said: “This refers to the Day of Uhud. That is, whatever victory I granted you, and whatever affliction occurred, was because of your sin—though I had decreed it for you.”
