Paradise.” He asked, “Or anything else?” I replied, “That is all!” He said, “Then help me to help you by prostrating often.” Recorded by Muslim and the compilers of the Sunan collections. (1)
c) Ma'dān ibn Abī Talha al-Ya'murī reported: I met Thawbān, the freedman of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—and said, “Tell me of a deed I may perform by which Allah will admit me into Paradise” (or he said, “I asked him about the deeds most beloved to Allah”). He remained silent. I asked him again, but he remained silent. Then I asked him a third time. He replied, “I asked the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—about that, and he said, ‘You should prostrate often before Allah (2), for you never
(1) This is an authentic hadith.
It was narrated by Ibn al-Mubārak in *al-Zuhd* (nos. 106 and 1236); Muslim in his *Sahīh*, Book of Prayer, chapter “The Virtue of Prostration and Encouragement to Perform It” (no. 489), whose wording is cited here; al-Nasā’ī in the Book of Leading the Prayer, chapter “The Virtue of Prostration” (2:227); and al-Tirmidhī in the Chapters on Supplications, chapter “What Has Been Related Concerning Supplication upon Waking at Night” (no. 3416; 4:234, *Tuhfa*), although he narrated only a portion that does not include the passage relevant here. It was also narrated by Abū Dāwūd in the Book of Prayer, chapter “The Time at Which the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—Would Rise at Night” (no. 1320; 1:507, *Awn*). Ibn Mājah narrated a portion of it that does not include the passage relevant here in the Book of Supplication, chapter “What One Should Supplicate with upon Waking at Night” (no. 3879).
This is the only hadith of Rabī'a ibn Ka'b found in the Six Books. See *Tuhfat al-Ashrāf* (3:168).
(2) What is meant here by “prostration” is voluntary prayer, since prostrating outside prayer and without a specific occasion is not encouraged as an independent act. Although “prostration” can also apply to obligatory prayer, every Muslim must perform the obligatory prayers. The Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him—therefore directed him to an additional deed by which he could attain what he sought.
For this reason, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalānī included the hadith of Rabī'a ibn Mālik in the chapter on voluntary prayer in *Bulūgh al-Marām* (2:3, *Subul*).
If you ask, “Why is a *rak'a* (unit of prayer) referred to as a prostration?” the answer is that, of all the acts of prayer, prostration most fully manifests servitude to Allah, Glorified and Exalted. It breaks and humbles the ego, and one dimension of servitude—submission—is realized through it. True worship consists of complete love for Allah together with complete submission to Him. Any soul that is broken and humbled before Allah, Glorified and Exalted, merits mercy. Abū Hurayra also narrated the following concerning prostration: The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said, “A servant is closest to his Lord while prostrating, so supplicate often.” Narrated by Muslim in the Book of Prayer, chapter “What Is Said While Bowing and Prostrating” (no. 482).
