Bughyat al-Mutatawwi fi Salat al-TatawwuMuhammad ibn Umar Bazmul

I say: These two hadiths establish that it is sanctioned to pray either two or four units after the Friday prayer. Whichever of the two a Muslim performs is permissible. It is preferable, however, to pray four units after the Friday prayer, because they are expressly stipulated in the wording of Abū Hurayrah’s hadith.

For this sunnah prayer—whether performed as two or four units—it is always preferable to perform it at home (1), without drawing any further distinction in this regard. (2)

(10-4) The Salāt al-Tasbīh (Prayer of Glorification)

Among the sanctioned prayers is the Salāt al-Tasbīh, described as follows in the hadith of Ibn Abbās:

Ibn Abbās reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to al-Abbās ibn Abd al-Muttalib: “O Abbās! O my uncle! Shall I not give you something? Shall I not bestow something upon you? Shall I not grant you a gift? Shall I not benefit you in ten ways? If you do this, Allah will forgive your sins: the first and the last, the old and the recent, those committed in error and deliberately, the minor and the major, and those committed secretly and openly—ten matters in all. You are to pray four units, reciting Sūrat al-Fātihah and another surah in each unit. When you have finished the recitation in the first unit while still standing, say fifteen times: ‘Glory be to Allah; all praise is due to Allah; there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah; and Allah is the Greatest.’ Then bow and say these words ten times while bowing. Then raise your head from bowing and say them ten times. Then descend into prostration and say them ten times while prostrating. Then raise

(1) This is based on the hadith: “The best prayer a person performs is that performed in his home, except for the obligatory prayer.” Its sources will be cited later, God willing. It is a *sahīh* hadith. The eminent scholar al-Albānī stated in *Tamām al-Minna* (pp. 341–432): “If a person performs two or four units after the Friday prayer in the mosque, that is permissible; if he performs them at home, that is better, because of this authentic hadith”—meaning the hadith, “The best prayer…” (2) There is no authentic evidence for the following distinction: “If he prays in the mosque, he should pray four units; but if he prays at home, he should pray two.” For a discussion and refutation of this distinction, see *Tamām al-Minna* (pp. 341–342).
